How PCH Is Expanding Access to Colorectal Cancer Screening

Through a partnership with Abbott, Pillars Community Health is expanding access to colorectal cancer screening, helping reduce barriers to preventive care and supporting earlier detection.

For many people, colorectal cancer screening can feel overwhelming. Concerns about cost, transportation, time away from work, or the screening process itself can prevent people from getting screened. At Pillars Community Health, we are working to remove those barriers and make preventive care more accessible for the communities we serve.

How PCH Is Closing the Gap

Colorectal cancer screening is an important part of preventive care for adults ages 45 to 75. To make screening more accessible, PCH has begun using Cologuard, an at-home screening test that looks for signs that may indicate colorectal cancer or precancerous changes.

Through a grant, PCH partnered with Abbott (formerly Exact Sciences) to improve colorectal cancer screening participation, reduce barriers to preventive care, and support earlier detection across our service area.

After receiving training from Abbott, our health centers received Cologuard kits. Cologuard is intended for adults 45 and older who are at average risk for colorectal cancer. It does not replace colonoscopy for people at higher risk, and a positive result requires follow-up with a colonoscopy. A negative result does not rule out cancer. Patients who receive a negative result should talk with their provider about ongoing screening, which may include repeating the test after three years.

Making Screening Easier for Patients

PCH identified patients who were due for screening and helped them access the at-home kits. Through this program, PCH has expanded colorectal cancer screening access among uninsured and underinsured adults, resulting in more than 132 completed screenings in 2026, increased participation, and more opportunities for early detection. The program helped more patients get preventive care while keeping specialty care available for those who need more tests.

This partnership has reduced barriers to screening in several ways:

  •  Offering a noninvasive screening option patients can complete at home.
  • Reducing transportation needs and time away from work for the initial screening.
  • Avoiding sedation and recovery time for the at-home test.
  • Expanding screening access for uninsured and underinsured patients.

Through this partnership, PCH is helping more patients complete recommended screenings and continues to expand outreach and education. Everyone deserves access to preventive care. By offering additional screening options and reducing common barriers, we are helping more people take an important step toward protecting their health.
