Esther Vulovic: Empowering Survivors and Building a Community of Advocates

Esther Vulovic now leads volunteer training at Pillars Community Health, supporting those who show up for people impacted by domestic and sexual violence.

Esther Vulovic brings more than 16 years of experience working with at-risk adults and children, including a decade supporting people impacted by domestic violence. Now serving as the Coordinator of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Training at Pillars Community Health (PCH), Esther leads the work of preparing and supporting volunteer advocates across our community.

She chose PCH because of its integrated approach to care, offering services that support individuals impacted by both domestic and sexual violence. Esther believes this work is about helping people reclaim their voice, especially in moments when they feel unheard.

Her journey at PCH began as a Residential Family Advocate at Constance Morris House, our domestic violence shelter. There, she worked directly with residents, providing trauma-informed support during some of the most difficult moments in their lives. That experience continues to shape her approach to advocacy and the way she supports others in this work.

In her role, Esther leads the 60-hour training program and helps shape how volunteer advocates are prepared to respond across our services. Through this training, participants gain the knowledge and skills to respond with active listening, empathy, and a trauma-informed approach that centers each person’s experience.

In this role, Esther is focused on strengthening the volunteer program and ensuring advocates feel prepared, supported, and connected as they step into this work.

Volunteers play a critical role in this work. They help ensure that support is available during evenings, weekends, and overnight hours by responding to our 24-hour confidential hotlines. Because of them, no one has to face these moments alone.

Esther shares:

“Together, we have the power to create a community where people are not alone, where their voices are valued, and where support is always within reach. Whether through advocacy, education, or volunteering your time, each of us can be part of that change. When someone feels like no one is listening, we believe them.”

This Volunteer Appreciation Month, Esther extends her gratitude to the volunteers who make this work possible.

“Volunteers mean so much to our organization. They help us continue our mission and ensure our services remain accessible to those who need them. We are grateful for every person who gives their time to support others.”
