DVAM 2024: Heal, Hold, & Center

October marks National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), a time to come together as a community to raise awareness, honor survivors, and support those impacted by domestic violence.

Since its inception in 1989, DVAM has shined a light on an issue that affects individuals in every corner of society. Domestic violence does not discriminate—it can affect anyone, regardless of age, income, gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, or nationality. And it goes beyond physical harm. Emotional abuse and controlling behaviors often accompany physical violence, making it difficult for survivors to leave. The effects of domestic violence can ripple through generations, leaving lasting physical and emotional trauma.

For DVAM 2024, Pillars Community Health is proud to continue the theme “Heal, Hold & Center.” This year, we’re focusing on the importance of collaboration, embracing diverse cultural approaches to healing, and centering the needs of the most marginalized in our efforts to end domestic violence. Creating safe, supportive spaces for survivors must be a priority if we’re going to break the cycle of violence and oppression.

The statistics are staggering. Every minute in the U.S., an average of 20 people are physically abused by an intimate partner. That adds up to more than 10 million people every year. Around 1 in 3 women, 1 in 4 men, and 1 in 2 transgender individuals will experience physical violence from a partner in their lifetime. For many, the abuse will be severe: 1 in 5 women and 1 in 7 men will suffer life-threatening violence. Children are not immune to the effects of domestic violence either—millions witness abuse in their homes each year, leading to emotional, social, and academic challenges that can last for decades.

For 45 years, Pillars Community Health has provided a safe space for survivors and their families, helping them navigate their options and make empowered choices for their futures. We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to heal and rebuild, and we are committed to offering the support survivors need to do so.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, our team will host a range of events and community campaigns to raise awareness. From panel discussions to donation drives, we invite you to get involved. Together, we can ensure that no one faces domestic violence alone.
