Healing and Hope: Exploring Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recognizes January as Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month. This observance aims to support individuals affected by substance use, raise awareness about available treatment options, and reduce the stigma associated with seeking help.

At Pillars Community Health (PCH), we are committed to not only explaining the impact of substance use but also highlighting the treatment services we offer to support those in need.

Understanding Substance Use Disorder

Before exploring treatment options, it’s essential to understand what substance use disorder (SUD) is and who it affects. SUD is a condition where an individual struggles to control their use of substances, which can include alcohol, prescription medications, and illegal drugs. This condition doesn’t discriminate—it affects people of all ages, genders, races, and ethnicities, including teens, adults, and seniors.

Substance use doesn’t just impact the individual; it often has a ripple effect on family, friends, coworkers, and communities. Even if you don’t recognize the signs of substance use disorder in yourself, those around you might see how it’s affecting your well-being and relationships.

Can Substance Use Disorder Be Treated?

While substance use disorders cannot be cured, they are treatable. Treatment plans are tailored to the individual, based on their unique needs. Common approaches include therapy, counseling, inpatient and outpatient programs, and rehabilitation. Medications may also be part of treatment, as recommended by a doctor.

  • Medications for Alcohol Use Disorder: Acamprosate, disulfiram, and naltrexone.
  • Medications for Opioid Use Disorder: Buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone. Examples of opioids include heroin, fentanyl, oxycodone (OxyContin®), hydrocodone (Vicodin®), codeine, and morphine.
