Celebrating a New Chapter: The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at the Newly Renovated Constance Morris House

Thursday, June 27, 2024, marked a significant milestone as we celebrated the ribbon cutting for the newly renovated Constance Morris House. This event was not just a ceremonial gesture but a profound step forward in our ongoing mission to provide safety, support, and healing for survivors of intimate partner and domestic violence.

A Safe Haven for 45 Years

For the past 45 years, Constance Morris House has stood as a beacon of hope for families and individuals of all genders seeking refuge from domestic violence. Over the decades, it has evolved, adapting to the changing needs of our community and incorporating best practices in shelter care. The recent renovations mark a pivotal shift in our philosophy and approach, moving from an “undisclosed location” to a more accessible and visible space.

Why the Change?

By making our location public, we ensure that survivors know exactly where they can find the help they need. This shift not only makes it safer for survivors but also reduces the stigma often associated with seeking shelter. The challenges of keeping shelter locations confidential can sometimes hinder timely access to support. Our new, open approach addresses these challenges head-on, fostering an environment where safety and support are readily accessible.

Enhanced Features for a Better Tomorrow

The renovated Constance Morris House boasts several new features designed to provide a safe, healthy, and trauma-informed environment. These include:

  • Private family rooms with flexible layouts: Offering comfort and adaptability for families of all sizes.
  • Private bathrooms: Ensuring privacy and dignity for all residents.
  • Upgraded kitchen and group areas: Creating a welcoming space for communal meals and gatherings.
  • Increased laundry facilities: Providing more convenience for residents.
  • Enhanced fire safety, electrical, and HVAC systems: Ensuring a safe and comfortable living environment.
  • A children’s playroom and updated playground equipment: Offering a safe and fun space for children to play and heal.
  • Group meeting areas: Facilitating support groups and community activities.
  • Increased security measures: Ensuring the safety and peace of mind of all residents and staff.

A Community Effort

The ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by numerous supporters, staff, and community members. Their presence underscored the collective effort that has gone into making these renovations possible. It was a moment of celebration, reflection, and renewed commitment to our mission.

Looking Ahead

As we open our doors wider, we aim to break down barriers and foster a community where safety and healing are within reach for all. This evolution reflects our unwavering dedication to inclusivity and accessibility. We are incredibly proud of the work that has gone into renovating Constance Morris House and grateful to all who have supported us along the way.
