Who is OB/GYN Care For?
General guidance and routine gynecologic care typically begins in the teens or early 20s; cervical cancer screening usually starts at age 21. Proactive general care helps prevent ongoing issues and stay ahead of your health. Annual general visits at Pillars Community Health ensure you are getting the OB/GYN care you need.
When to be seen sooner or more often:
- Abnormal prior results
- Personal or family history
- Symptoms like irregular bleeding or pelvic pain
- Pregnancy or planning a pregnancy
Routine preventative OBGYN care ensures you are taking the necessary steps to prevent issues early on with screenings and education. However, if you notice a new symptom make an appointment as soon as possible rather than waiting for an annual visit.
Due for an exam, or planning a pregnancy? Call 708-PILLARS to schedule an OB/GYN visit and get the care you need.
What to Expect During Your Appointment
Pillars Community Health provides a private, judgement-free environment where you can speak openly and ask any questions. Your provider will take time to understand your needs and explain each step before it happens. During your visit you can expect:
- A Confidential Conversation: Your provider will ask about your menstrual cycle, sexual and reproductive health, pregnancy history, medications, and any symptoms or concerns you have.
- An Exam When Appropriate: Depending on your age, history, and reason for the visit, your provider may perform a pelvic exam or a clinical breast exam. They will explain what to expect, and a chaperone is available if you would like one.
- Screening If You're Due: If it's time for cervical cancer screening, your provider can complete a Pap test and HPV test during your visit. It may also be a good time to discuss contraception or planning a pregnancy.
- Clear Next Steps and Follow-Up: Your provider will review any findings, explain when results will be ready, and coordinate any additional testing, treatment, or specialist referral you may need.
Preparing for Your Appointment
A little preparation helps you get the most from your visit. Before your appointment, please:
- Note the First Day of Your Last Period: Your provider will ask, and it helps guide screening and any pregnancy-related care. If you can, try to schedule so you are not on your period when a Pap test is planned – though you can still be seen if the timing doesn't work out. If you have bleeding that is not part of your regular period, do not delay your test.
- Skip Certain Products Before a Pap Test: For the most accurate cervical screening, avoid intercourse, tampons, douching, and vaginal creams or medications for about two days beforehand when possible.
- Gather Your History and Records: Bring the dates and results of past Pap tests or screenings, your pregnancy history, and a list of current medications and any birth control you use.
- Bring Your Identification and Insurance: Bring a photo ID and your insurance card if you have one.
- Write Down Your Questions: Note anything you would like to ask about contraception, pregnancy, symptoms, costs, or follow-up care so nothing gets missed.
