People of all genders are capable of perpetrating violence. Studies from the CDC show:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>About <strong>1 in 12 teens<\/strong> have experienced physical dating violence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>About <strong>1 in 10 teens<\/strong> have experienced sexual dating violence.<\/li>\n<li>Females Report higher rates of physical and sexual dating violence; however, teens of all genders are affected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Teens who identify as LGBTQ+ experience higher rates of physical and sexual dating violence, often due to stigma, discrimination, and barriers to support.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Risk Factors<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition to the populations mentioned above, some teens are at increased risk of experiencing dating violence. \u00a0The Children\u2019s Hospital of Philadelphia identifies these risk factors as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teens who have witnessed forms of violence at home, in their community, or among peers<\/li>\n<li>Teens in unhealthy or controlling relationships<\/li>\n<li>Teens who have experienced physical, sexual, emotional, or verbal abuse in the past<\/li>\n<li>Teens who use substances such as alcohol, tobacco, or drugs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Forms Of Violence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Teen dating violence is not limited to physical harm. Teen dating violence can include any of the following according to the American Psychological Association:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Physical<\/strong>\u2013 hitting, punching, slapping, shoving, kicking, or other physical force intended to cause harm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Emotional<\/strong> \u2013 verbal and nonverbal behaviors meant to harm or control a partner including threats, yelling, spreading rumors, isolation intimidation, bullying (in person or online), stalking, manipulation, or controlling behavior<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sexual<\/strong>\u2013 unwanted touching or kissing, forced sexual acts without consent, or sharing sexual images without consent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Effects<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Teen dating violence can have both short- and long-term impacts. According to The American Academy of Pediatrics, survivors may experience:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increased risk of depression, or anxiety<\/li>\n<li>Increased risk of substance use, including drugs, tobacco, or alcohol<\/li>\n<li>Increased risk of suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts<\/li>\n<li>Increased risk of developing an eating disorder<\/li>\n<li>Increased risk of pregnancy<\/li>\n<li>Increased risk of sexually transmitted infections<\/li>\n<li>Increased likelihood of experiencing violence again later in life<\/li>\n<li>Reduced intimacy in future relationships<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What You Can Do to Help Your Teen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Adults play an important role in supporting teens and helping prevent dating violence. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center recommends:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Modeling healthy, respectful relationships at home<\/li>\n<li>Teaching teens about healthy relationships, including trust, communication, safety, respect, and boundaries<\/li>\n<li>Believing and supporting survivors<\/li>\n<li>Helping teens manage emotions in healthy ways<\/li>\n<li>Connecting teens to mental health support, such as therapy, when needed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pillars Community Health\u2019s therapists are here to support teens as they navigate mental health concerns and difficult experiences.
