Whether you’re on a job site, managing customers or patients, driving routes, working in caregiving or food service, handling office tasks—or juggling multiple jobs—workplace stress is real. It can take a toll not just on how we feel day to day, but on our long-term health and well-being. And it’s not always something you can leave at the door.

What Is Stress?

The World Health Organization defines stress as “a state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult situation.” Workplace stress, then, is the mental or emotional strain related to your job or the work you do. This can include high demands, limited control over your schedule, conflicts with coworkers or customers, or just the ongoing pressure of trying to keep up.

Stress is a normal response—but ongoing stress can take a toll. It may affect your sleep, appetite, and energy, or lead to physical symptoms like headaches, body pain, or long-term health issues such as high blood pressure or weight changes. If you’re noticing these signs, our team is here to help.

Managing Stress in Your Work Life

No matter your job or schedule, it’s important to find ways to care for yourself. Here are a few ideas:

Set Boundaries Where You Can

If you’re able, take your breaks, speak up about workload concerns, and find small ways to pause during the day. Even a few minutes to step outside, breathe deeply, or stretch can help.

We recognize that not every job offers flexibility. If you’re working long shifts, multiple jobs, or navigating caregiving responsibilities, small acts of self-care—like listening to calming music, deep breathing on a break, or doing a quick body scan—can provide moments of relief.

Keep Moving—In a Way That Works for You

You don’t need a gym membership to get the benefits of movement. Walking on your break, stretching during your commute, or dancing around your kitchen can help release tension. Activities like yoga, meditation, or journaling can also support emotional wellness—and they don’t require a lot of time or money.

Reach Out

Stress can feel isolating, but you’re not alone. Talk to someone you trust, whether it’s a coworker, friend, or family member. And if you’re feeling overwhelmed, support is available. Pillars Community Health offers mental health services, including counseling, psychiatry, support groups, brief intervention, behavioral health supports and screenings for anxiety and depression.

Worried about the cost or finding time? We’ll work with you to connect you to resources that fit your schedule and needs.

If you’re experiencing a mental health crisis, our trained staff are available 24 hours a day at 708-PILLARS (708-745-5277). You deserve support—and we’re here to help.

In honor of Stress Awareness Month, we’re talking about real-life stress—and what
