Overnight Advocate – Domestic Violence Shelter

** this is a part-time position.  The required schedule is: 11:45 PM-8:00 AM on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. ***

SUMMARY

To maintain the safety of CMH residents during the overnight shift and to respond to the domestic violence (DV) and sexual assault (SA) hotlines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  •  Maintains safety of shelter residents; complies with program policies and protocols for responding to the domestic violence (DV) and sexual assault (SA) hotlines, interacting with shelter residents and co-workers and security of the CMH facility.
  • Provides crisis intervention, information and referral via 24-hour domestic violence telephone crisis-line.
  • Answers 24-hour sexual assault hotline, transfers calls to the designated hotline volunteer or back-up advocate and documents the calls on the sexual assault hotline log as required.
  • Fulfills designated shift responsibilities to ensure safety and efficient operation of the shelter.
  • Provides in-person crisis intervention to shelter residents and addresses conflicts among residents if needed.
  • Documents in-person and telephone interactions with clients and their collaterals in accordance with agency/program policy, which includes milieu flow sheet, shift notes, call logs, telephone and in-person intake forms and service documentation sheets (SDS).
  • Assists shelter residents in addressing their concrete or basic needs by providing personal items, transportation and/or making telephone calls, as needed. Enforces shelter agreements as needed.
  • Attends and participates in staff training sessions and monthly staff meetings as required.
  • Completes required departmental and agency training (in person or online)
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

 EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. At least six (6) months of direct service with clients in Domestic Violence, Trauma, Sexual Assault, Addictions, or related life crises is required.

40-hour Illinois Domestic Violence Training required.

Computer experience also is required.  Experience working third shift or in a residential program is an asset.  A special interest in working with adult survivors of domestic violence and their children is desirable.  Ability to balance job responsibilities as a team player with the ability to work independently.  Ability to perform competently in a crisis situation.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS
Computer literacy including data base proficiency, conscientiousness, thoroughness, cooperative, team builder, efficient and reliable.

 LANGUAGE SKILLS

Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills would be helpful but are not a requirement.
